The work converges on a single principle: be quotable, be trustworthy, be everywhere your buyers ask.
The discipline shares its foundations with traditional search engine optimization. Crawlable HTML, useful content, real authority, fast pages, clear structure — those still matter, and the teams already strong on classical SEO start with a meaningful advantage. The shift is in the unit of success. Traditional SEO succeeds when a buyer clicks the blue link. AI search succeeds when the AI engine names you in the answer, often without any click at all. The win has moved upstream, from the moment of the visit to the moment of the recommendation.
One clarification worth getting out of the way early, because the SERP for "AI SEO" mixes them. The six AI engines that matter — and what each rewards
"AI search" is one phrase in the press; in practice it is six engines with markedly different ranking behavior. Treating them as a single audience is the most common mistake we see — and the one that produces the most disappointing first reports. Each engine has a personality, and a brand that earns citations across all six has done meaningfully different things for each one.
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
ChatGPT answers from two complementary sources: its training data, which updates on multi-month cycles, and a real-time browsing capability that draws from Bing's index. The training updates explain why authority you build today shows up in citations months later; the browsing tool explains why a strong Bing ranking today can win you a citation tomorrow. In the patterns we observe across our customers, ChatGPT disproportionately cites well-structured documentation sites, official brand pages, Reddit threads, YouTube transcripts, and Wikipedia entries. The move that matters most: ensure your priority pages rank in Bing's top 30 for the questions your buyers ask, and put your most-citable claims directly under a heading that matches the question word-for-word.
Claude (Anthropic)
Claude is the most conservative of the six. It prefers academic, well-attributed, recently-modified sources, and it will gracefully decline to cite low-trust pages even when they are technically relevant. Anthropic's own thinking about model behavior — published openly — shows up in how the assistant treats sources. The implication for marketing teams is straightforward: invest in the things that make a page look trustworthy to a careful reader. Author bylines with verifiable credentials, honest dateModified timestamps, links out to primary sources, and a measured tone. Claude rewards the rigor of the whole page, not just the keyword on it.
Perplexity
Perplexity is the most transparent of the six. Every answer ships with inline citations, which makes Perplexity the easiest engine to study and the easiest to influence. Its retrieval behavior maps closely to traditional organic search: if you are in the top 20 organic results for the underlying question, you are a strong candidate to be cited. Perplexity is the engine where classical SEO and AI search optimization converge most directly. The move that matters most: run the queries you care about inside Perplexity itself and study which sources it cites. Those are your direct competitors for the answer, and the gap between you and them is usually shorter than it looks.
Gemini and Google's AI Overview
Gemini is Google's model; the AI Overview is the SERP feature it powers. Both draw on Google's index, which means everything you already do well for Google is already working for them. Google's own published guidance on AI Search is clear: content that helps people, demonstrates expertise, and is technically clean is the content that performs. We see the AI Overview disproportionately surface pages with clean FAQ schema, real list and table structure, and the kind of clear declarative prose that lifts cleanly into an answer. The move that matters most: add FAQPage structured data to your highest-intent pages and watch your AI Overview presence shift within a few weeks.
Grok (xAI)
Grok has the strongest real-time bias of any engine and a heavy weighting toward conversation on X. For most categories that translates into a single practical observation: Grok cites recent posts by authoritative voices more readily than long-form evergreen content. If X is part of your distribution, post your strongest claims there with sources and Grok will tend to pick them up. If X is not part of your channel mix, treat Grok as a lower-priority engine — and revisit that decision as xAI's retrieval evolves.
DeepSeek
DeepSeek leans heavily on training data with infrequent index updates. The practical consequence is that DeepSeek often quotes facts that are months or years old, and gives unusual weight to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and well-aged blog posts on authoritative domains. If your brand qualifies, contribute your factual basics to Wikipedia and Wikidata. Ensure the high-traffic blog posts from earlier years have current canonical URLs and accurate facts. DeepSeek may still be quoting the version from two years ago.
The twelve signals that actually move citation share
The list below is ordered by what we see actually changing citation share inside the brands we work with, not by what makes the tidiest article. None of these signals is exotic. Most are within reach of any marketing team that already runs a competent content function.
- Be mentioned anywhere authoritative on the open web. Wikipedia, Crunchbase, G2, Capterra, AlternativeTo, your local chamber of commerce, the trade press in your category. Cross-web entity consistency is what teaches each AI engine that your brand is a real participant in your space.
- Match the buyer's question literally in an H2 or H3. AI engines do passage retrieval before they synthesize. If your buyer would ask "what is X" then an H2 reading "What is X?" is the single highest-impact change you can make to a page.
- Wrap question and answer pairs in FAQPage schema. Six clean Q&A pairs near the top of a commercial page is the most consistent way to appear in Google's AI Overview and to be quoted by Claude and Perplexity. Microsoft's own guidance for AI search visibility points to the same pattern.
- Use Article schema with a verifiable author and honest dates. "Anonymous" bylines and never-modified dates are increasingly discounted. A real author with a real
sameAslink to a public profile lifts citation rates. - Publish an llms.txt at root. Not yet honored by every engine, but cheap to add, harmless to traditional SEO, and a clean signal of editorial intent for the engines that already use it.
- Allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended and Applebot-Extended in robots.txt. Many brands quietly blocked these in 2024 and 2025 out of caution and never undid it. Check your file today; the cost of being invisible to the AI index is now meaningfully higher than it was a year ago.
- Lead every paragraph with a short, declarative sentence. AI engines extract passages literally. A paragraph that buries its point in clause six is much less likely to be quoted than one that opens with the conclusion.
- Use numbered lists and tables near the top of procedural pages. Steps are the easiest unit for an AI engine to reproduce verbatim with attribution. A clean numbered list is often the single passage an engine quotes.
- Earn internal links from your highest-authority pages. The page on your own site that wins the most citations is usually the one most-linked-to from your homepage and your top blog posts. Internal linking is an underused lever.
- Get quoted in news, podcasts, and YouTube transcripts. These feed long-cycle training data. A 30-second mention on a relevant industry podcast can outlast a hundred blog backlinks.
- Use consistent Organization JSON-LD across every page. Same name, same URL, same logo, same
sameAsentries pointing to your verified social and professional profiles. Disambiguation is half of entity ranking. - Update content and dates honestly. AI engines increasingly prefer recently-modified content. Bumping a date without changing the substance is detectable. Updating the substance and the timestamp together is the durable win.
A sixty-minute review your team can run today
The five steps below take about an hour for a typical site of fewer than two hundred pages. Set a timer. The goal is not perfection — it is to find the two or three changes that will move citation share most before the end of the week.
Step 1 — Review your AI bot policy and llms.txt (5 min)
Open your robots.txt in a browser and search for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and Applebot-Extended. Any Disallow: / for these bots is a direct hit on your AI visibility — undo it unless you have a deliberate legal reason. Then check whether yoursite.com/llms.txt exists. If it does not, you will add a draft in step five.
Step 2 — Audit schema on your top ten pages (15 min)
Pull your ten most-trafficked URLs from Search Console or your analytics platform. Run each through Google's Rich Results Test. Each should emit, at a minimum, Article or WebPage schema, an Organization publisher block, an author reference, and (where the page answers questions) FAQPage. Note the gaps. You will close them in the next sprint.
Step 3 — Rewrite the hero of your most important page (20 min)
Pick a single commercial page that matters disproportionately to your business. Replace its H1 with a literal statement of what the page answers. Rewrite the first sentence as a direct, declarative answer. Move the marketing positioning to paragraph two. This single rewrite is responsible for more early citation wins than any other tactic we see.
Step 4 — Add FAQ blocks to your commercial pages (15 min)
Capture the five questions your sales team hears most often this quarter. Write each as a 50- to 80-word plain-prose answer. Wrap them in FAQPage JSON-LD. Place the block above the mid-fold of the page. This is the highest-conversion-per-minute change in the entire review.
Step 5 — Update the directories AI engines trust (5 min)
Claim or update your profiles on G2, Capterra, AlternativeTo, Crunchbase, and the industry directories that matter in your category. These pages punch above their weight in AI citations because they are well-structured and trusted by the training pipeline. They are also one of the easiest places to fix incorrect facts about your brand.
llms.txt: the new file every site should publish
llms.txt is a proposed standard that lives at the root of your site, the way robots.txt does, and gives AI crawlers a clean, prioritized index of your most important content. The idea is simple: rather than asking an AI engine to figure out what matters on a sprawling site, you hand it a curated map.
As of mid-2026 the standard is honored by some engines (notably Anthropic's crawler and Perplexity) and ignored by others. OpenAI's GPTBot still relies on robots.txt and on-page signals. The honest read: llms.txt is not yet load-bearing for all engines, but the engines that do use it use it well, and the file costs almost nothing to maintain.

Add the file at yoursite.com/llms.txt. Keep it short — fifty links is plenty, five hundred is noise. Update it whenever you publish substantial new content. Treat it as a compounding 1% lift, not a silver bullet.
How to know any of this is working
This is the section that separates AI search optimization from theatre. Without a measurement loop, every tactic in this guide is a guess; with one, the same tactics become repeatable. There are three numbers that matter, and one of them is genuinely new.
The three numbers a marketing team should track weekly
- Citation share. Of a fixed set of representative buyer prompts, what percentage produce an answer that names your brand? This is the AI-search equivalent of share of voice. Run the same prompts every week. The number should move up.
- Engine coverage. Of the six engines you probe, how many cited you this week? A brand cited by five of six has materially different exposure than one cited by two of six, even at the same per-engine citation share.
- Citation sentiment. When you are cited, is the citation favourable, neutral, or unfavourable? Unfavourable citations are common and invisible everywhere else. They are also the single most actionable insight you will get all quarter.
The manual method (your first month)
Run this in a spreadsheet for the first month, before you evaluate any tooling. The work clarifies what you actually need.
- Write 30 buyer-intent prompts that name your category but not your brand. Examples: "What are the best tools for X?", "How should a small team approach Y?", "Who are the leaders in Z?"
- Build a 30-by-6 grid: prompts down the side, engines across the top.
- Each week, paste each prompt into each engine. Record whether your brand is named in the answer (yes or no), and the citation sentiment.
- Compute citation share as the number of "yes" cells divided by 180. Compute engine coverage as the number of engines with at least one "yes" divided by six.
Thirty prompts, six engines, weekly: 180 manual probes a week, 720 a month. Two or three weeks in, most teams discover that the cadence — not the analysis — is the hard part. That is when the question naturally shifts from "can we measure this?" to "what should we use to scale it?"
Evaluating an AI visibility platform

These are the patterns we see most often when a brand wonders why citation share is not moving. None is dramatic. All are common.

- Skipping measurement and "trusting the process." Without weekly numbers, there is no process — only opinions about which tactic might be working. The number is the loop.
How to staff this work
One question we hear constantly: who, on a small marketing team, owns AI search optimization? Our honest answer is that the right owner is the same person who owns your existing content strategy.
